Earth Day 2017 with Wild Spirits Forest & Nature School!

Wild Spirits' Earth Day open forest event was a wild success! About a hundred Valley folks explored their way around our 200+ acre woodland lot where our Greenwood forest school prohramming will take place. It was our hope that the children and their families would forge connections to the natural world through our planned activities as well as opportunities for free play during our 2.5 hour event. People who fall in love with nature will undoubtedly want to protect it. We decorated birch tree cookies, performed some nature weaving, planted seeds, played mosquito tag, then hiked back to our base camp to have a barbeque. Food always tastes better outside! The young adventurers climbed on logs, inspected fairy houses, and threw sticks in the Annapolis river. After the trek back to the edge of the woods, the crowd eagerly watched some wood carving and a handful of children got to try their hand at the craft. As a forest school educator, I was left feeling so excited about our upcoming spring session. The spirit and vigor of the children's involvement was exhilarating! Their curiosity and interest in the environment around them was awe-inspiring. Most left with wind-blown hair, dirty nails, and sparkles in their eyes. I can't think of a better way to celebrate Earth day than to get out there and jump into nature with two feet and arms outstretched. People got a little taste of the magic that will take place at the stunning location of our Greenwood forest school. The spring session begins on May 1! "Unless we are willing to encourage our children to reconnect with and appreciate the natural world, we can't expect them to help protect and care for it." -David Suzuki
